Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Honjo Tategawa (The Timberyard at Honjo)

A print from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series featuring scenes of Mt. Fuji. This print was made when Hokusai was about seventy years old.
During the Edo Era, timberyards that used the river for transporting timber were crowded along the north bank of the Tategawa River (nearby the former Aioimachi 1-chome through to 2-chome). Hokusai has depicted a scene of Mt. Fuji seen from between the timberyards, the workers and the timber. The composition of this print with Mt. Fuji visible between the piles of timber is typical of Hokusai, who was very proficient at expressing perspective.

“Nishimura Storage Yard” is written on the timber storage area at the bottom right-hand side and “2- Chome Bakurocho” and “Supplied by Eijudo” is written on the timber on the left and right of this, enabling Hokusai to casually advertise the name and address of the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series’ publisher.
